However, what I'm suggesting is that the "right" limits are probably more liberal and expansive than the head ref would initially think they are (see my example of the He-Man tank). The whole point is to be pushed into new places, as referee. And if you let yourself be the sort of DM who will hand over the reins, knowing you're content to undo everything afterward...what was the point?Erik Jensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16232284705834559450noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935484436602082601.post-79201580895078762542022-08-03T16:05:47.549-04:002022-08-03T16:05:47.549-04:00Thank you both for your comments! Do you think one in...This is all very good advice.

Do you think one instill caveats about who remains "Head Referee?" I've had at least one campaign where I handed over the reins to another DM...and the game became hers alone. This was as much my choice as anyone else's: I was burned out from running (four or five years) and wanted a shot as a player. What started as "guest DMing," however, turned into a general abdication of the throne...and then when *that* DM pulled the plug (after a couple years running), the whole thing went belly-up.

Which, again, doesn't mean I disagree with anything written in this post...especially with regard to trust and a willingness to share. But should there be limits imposed and boundaries set when it comes to these power exchanges? Should there be understandings that such excursions are only temporary, that the original DM should have 'final say' on what does or does not happen in the campaign world?

Because there's a difference between sharing players (as was often done "back in the day" with PCs hopping from one DM's group to another) and sharing worlds. You can publish a Wampus County or Carcosa and let folks set up their own world based on the book, but that's not the same as turning over your own campaign to someone for a couple session and seeing them open the Gates of Hell on the thing. I saw a three-man party (the leader a 12th level fighter armed with Blackrazor) carve through most of the G-series circa 1990 (it was the 2E era, but we were still playing 1E). If memory serves, they kind of blitzed through the Glacial Rift before getting teleported to Snurre's castle while getting little of the loot.

Eventually they ended up pushing farther into the thing than was probably wise, ending up on a lower level, surrounded, protected only by a globe of invulnerability. I can't remember what happened after that...though I'm pretty sure that was "the end" as I don't remember any further adventures for those particular characters.JBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03263662621289630246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935484436602082601.post-78639748906471351452022-05-10T13:04:11.132-04:002022-05-10T13:04:11.132-04:00I realise it may not be giant-related, but we must...I realise it may not be giant-related, but we must know what happened to Zebulon!thekelvingreenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01928260185408072124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935484436602082601.post-1881818348798243082022-05-08T12:55:42.934-04:002022-05-08T12:55:42.934-04:00Awwww yesssss
